Title: Allele Dimorphic of Eba-175 gene of Plasmodium falciparum and Associated with Clinical Manifestation in Jayapura District, Papua, Indonesia

Abstract: Erythrocyte Binding Antigen-175 (EBA-175) represents one of the most important ligands mediating erythrocyte invasion and has become the target of various studies in attempts to obtain a suitable vaccine candidate. Previous studies reported that the eba-175 gene have two dimorphic alleles that were characterized by nucleotide insertion of either a 342 bp segment in FCR-3 strain (F-segment) or a 423 bp segment in CAMP strains (C-segment). The Moleculer Epidemiologic studies to determine the frequency distribution of C and F segments in various malaria endemic areas and associated with clinical manifestation was conducted in three sub-districts of Jayapura. The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency distribution of dimorphic allele of eba-175 gene among the clinically asymptomatic and symptomatic falciparum malaria cases in Jayapura District. From PCR analyzed eba-175 gene obtained in 110 asymptomatic and 100 symptomatic subjects indicate that the C segment was the dominant in both groups, with the frequency distribution in asymptomatic malaria was 62.7% of C segment and 18.2% of F segment and 19.1% of mixture of C and F. In symptomatic malaria cases, the frequency distribution was 55% for C segment and 37% for F segment and 8% mixture of C and F. Statistical analysis using Chi-square revealed no specific correlation between the eba-175 segments with the clinical manifestation of malaria. This study identified several malaria endemic areas in Jayapura district, Papua Province, Indonesia. Moleculer analyses of the P. falciparum isolates demonstrated that the C segment of eba-175 gene is dominant but no signicant correlation was found between the allelic frequency of eba-175 gene with the clinical manifestation as well as severity of the disease.

Title: The Use of Suggestions by Native Speakers of English and Chinese Learners of English

Abstract: This study examines a speech act that is rather nebulous for English learners – ‘suggestions’. It digs deep into the ways Chinese learners of English suggest compared to native speakers of English. Furthermore, it finds out the reasons behind miscommunication and misunderstanding that occur in conversations between native speakers of English and Chinese learners, and it aims at determining the conversation strategies used by both sides when suggesting in order to find what sometimes goes wrong and leads to such misunderstandings and miscommunications. Under a closely analyzed survey, 40 Chinese participants and 40 American participants are asked to take part in the 8 situation survey (see appendix 1 and 2). The objectives of the study are set to find out: what marks the differences in suggesting between Chinese learners of English and native speakers of English; helping tools for ESL and EFL teachers alike in order to enhance Chinese learners’ awareness of how to suggest in English; rising the awareness among native speakers of English about how ‘suggestions’ from Chinese learners may come off, which will lead to a better understanding of how NNSs suggest.

Title: Development of Antidiabetic Active Compounds from Ethyl Acetate Extract of Acorus calamus L. Rhizomes

Abstract: In research development of herbal medicine from selected plants for antidiabetic, ethyl acetate extract of Acorus calamus L. plays on biological role in differentiation of preadiposites and posses powerful in diabetes mellitus (DM type 2). Two active compounds are already known are 3-Β,22-Α-trihiroksiolean-30-metoksikarbonil-12-ene-22-O-Α-L-rhamnoside and Β-sitosterol-3-O-Β-D-glucosidase. The proposed of this research is to isolate antidiabetic active compound with activity as inhibitor Α-glucosidase from ethyl acetate extract and modify the active compounds to obtained compound with higher activity and lower side effect based on structure activity relationship (SAR). From the ethyl acetate extracts obtained four semi-polar fractions that has similar TLC spot (fraction 4, 5, 6 and 7) that was active as Α-glucosidase inhibitor with IC50 values are 22.86, 13.54, 13.34, and 18.92 µg/mL, respectively, and three polar fractions (fractions 20, 21, and 22) were active as Α-glucosidase inhibitor with IC50 values 13.55, 3.08, and 6.85 µg/mL, respectively. SAR studies showed that Β-sitosterol-3-O-Β-D-glucosidase active compound have similarity with acarbose as positive standard of antidiabetic drug.
